Mint and freeze authority: what they mean and why to revoke them

Updated:

In short: the mint authority can create more tokens and the freeze authority can block holders. Revoking them removes these powers forever, which is why buyers and scanners check them first.

What is the mint authority?

It is the key allowed to create new units of the token. While it exists, its owner can print millions of tokens, sell them and crash the price. Once revoked, the supply is fixed forever.

What is the freeze authority?

It is the key allowed to freeze any holder’s token account. A frozen account cannot send or sell. Scam tokens use it to let people buy, then block them from selling: this is called a honeypot.

What is the update authority?

It is the key allowed to change the token’s name, ticker and logo. It is less dangerous, but a token whose look can change can be disguised later. Locking it shows the token will stay the same.

Why buyers check them

Wallets, DexScreener, RugCheck and trading bots show warnings when mint or freeze authority is still active. Many traders and bots skip these tokens entirely. Revoking them is the minimum for a token to be taken seriously.

Can it be undone?

No. Revoking sets the authority to “none” on the blockchain. Nobody can get it back, not even the creator. That is exactly what makes it trustworthy.

How to check any token

Paste the address into the MemeKiln token check. It reads the token directly on Solana and shows each authority as revoked or active.

How MemeKiln handles it

Every token created on MemeKiln has its mint authority revoked and never gets a freeze authority. Locking the name and logo is one click.
